The short answer
On the price lists we read on 5 November 2026, a single private lesson at a US ballroom studio cost $95 to $160 at the regular price, and a drop-in group class $15 to $30. Packages brought the price of a private lesson down, in one case to about $72. These are typical published prices, not an average: they vary by city, by studio and by teacher, and many studios publish no prices at all.
The studios that state a length give 45 or 50 minutes for a private lesson. Several charge the same for one person or a couple.

The McAllen studio's page carries a 2015 copyright line, so its prices may be older than the others.
What a package does to the price
A package is lessons bought in advance at a lower price each. Worked out from the published prices above:
- Firebeat Ballroom: ten lessons for $1,190 is $119 a lesson, against $125 for one.
- Ballroom Dream: ten for $950 is $95 a lesson, against $105.
- Rhythm Room Dance Studio: twelve for $865 is about $72 a lesson, against $100.
Before buying, ask whether the lessons expire and whether they can be shared or refunded. The calculator below shows the lesson at which a package has paid for itself, and whether you will use it in time. Every figure in it is yours to change.

Intro offers
Many studios, the large franchises in particular, publish only a first-lesson offer and quote the rest at the studio. The offers we found:
- Arthur Murray, The Woodlands, TX: a first private lesson for $35, 30 minutes.
- Arthur Murray, Fishers, IN: an intro lesson for $29.
- Firebeat Ballroom: a 30-minute intro lesson for $49, one person or a couple.
- Colorado Dancesport: three 25-minute private lessons and two weeks of group classes for $49.
- Dance With Me: an introductory private lesson for $49.
- Fred Astaire Dance Studios, Carrollton, TX: an intro lesson, four private lessons and 30 days of beginner group classes for $500, online.
What changes the price
- The teacher. Firebeat Ballroom charges $35 more for a master instructor's lesson than for an instructor's.
- Membership. Colorado Dancesport charges members $85 and everyone else $95 for the same 45 minutes.
- Length. 45 and 50 minutes are both common, so compare the price per minute, not per lesson.
- Packages. The bigger the package, the lower the price of each lesson, as above.
- Where. The studios above are in six states and differ by more than $50 for one lesson. A studio near you may be outside this range either way.
Prices outside the US
Where studios publish prices, in their own currency. We do not convert them: a price in euros is what a dancer in that city pays.

German dance schools sell mostly group courses: Nuzinger in Heidelberg lists a 12-week beginners' course at 198 € a person plus a 20 € registration fee, and Tanzschule Pelzer in Bad Soden a beginners' course for couples at 140 € for eight classes of 90 minutes.
What we could not find
- No national body publishes an average lesson price, in the US or elsewhere, so this page gives published prices and no average.
- The Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire studios we read publish their intro offers, not their regular lesson or package prices.
- Lessons with a visiting coach or a champion are priced privately; we found no published price to quote.
